Welcome to this season’s issue of SpicyLetter!
As we move into the abundance or less of the holiday season, themes of food and communing with it, with others or with just ourselves, float the edges of our thoughts. Somehow, the brain’s capacity for triggering nostalgia related to it; growing it, selecting it, preparing it and consuming it, brings more vivid memories of it and all its associations. Surely food by its power to nourish the body and brain is nostalgia in it’s highest form.
Perhaps like nothing else, food is the language of the universal– memory of the collective. And for any who praise it (regardless of practice or faith) a poem by William Carlos Williams speaks to the honesty of it,
There is nothing to eat,
seek it where you will,
but the body of the Lord.
The blessed plants
and the sea, yield it
to the imagination
In this edition, writers featured will explore the theme of food. Writer Molly Fisk, poet Judith Shepard, Daniel Godston; a regular contributor to Cool Spice and others share their writing menus that bring us to the same table.
Also, the classic poem written by Christina Rossetti, Goblin Market and Paul Lawrence Dunbar’s, Dinah Kneading Dough are presented. Both are literary favorites and every time read, something new is discovered. Their work seemingly formal and archaic as compared to today’s post-modern standards, is yet vibrant, playful and possessing an irresistible musicality.
Perhaps, language, just like food itself; a mother’s cooked meal that no one can cook quite like her, or food we remember as related to an experience, food that’s good just by the growth of it, food eaten for shear pleasure, food news that we’re all inundated with, food to heal something, beautiful food or food so rustic, simple and perhaps a little less spicy, is just what the muses call for.
